1. What do rooms come with?
This depends on what room type you have got. But your room will come with a bed (yes!), desk, chair, wardrobe, shelves, lamp, phone, laundry basket, bin and some curtains. All rooms have an ensuite bathroom. Kitchens are shared with the rest of your floor, but don’t worry, they are very large indeed.
2. Can I smoke in my room?
Absolutely not. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the hall. In fact, you must be at least 5 metres away from the hall before you light up.
3. Can I put up posters in my room?
If you wish to decorate your room, please use White-Tac, as BluTac and pins will damage your walls, and incur you a charge when you leave. You will have a pinboard above your desk, so you can use that to keep stuff on.
4. How do I report a defect?
Please report it online here: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/accommodation/defectsreporting . Urgent defects will be dealt with within 24-48hrs, non-urgent will take upto 7 days.
5. How much do phone calls cost?
From your desk phone, calls to other rooms or other Imperial College phones are free: just punch in the number. You can also receive calls for free. However, calls to outside lines incur a small fee: check your welcome pack for more details.
6. Do I need to bring a TV?
There is a TV provided in each kitchen, so probably not. If you do bring your own, you will need a TV license by law – the hall license will not cover your room. Please see www.tvlicensing.co.uk for more details. Alternately you could always use BBC iPlayer, for which no TV license is required!
7. How much storage space is there in my room?
Standard rooms come with three book shelves, a cabinet with draws, an alcove near your bed (with three shelves), under bed storage, a wardrobe (including lockable security draw, and hanging space), and the bathroom contains two good sized cabinets. Premium and deluxe rooms come with all of the above, with the addition of a nice leather chair and an additional chest of draws.
8. Is bedding provided, what size do I need?
No, so please do remember to bring it!! You will need a duvet, pillows and pillow cases, and bed-sheets. I recommend a double duvet irrespective of your bed size for extra cosy-ness. Twin and standard single rooms have single beds. If you have a premium single or a deluxe room, then a double sheet will be best.
9. What items are prohibited?
Any sort of animals: yes, leave them at home please 🙂 Also, fridges/freezers, and “electrical cooking devices” (like kettles / rice cookers / toasters / deep fat fryers) are banned in rooms as they cause false fire alarms. If you are diabetic and need a room fridge for insulin you must contact the Accommodation team at Imperial. The use of all electric fires (unless provided by the College), gas and liquid fuel heaters, candles and hookah pipes is also prohibited.
10. Can I deliver stuff to my room in advance?

11. Can I see my room in advance?
As above, unfortunately not.
12. Should I bring sports stuff with me?
If you wish, by all means yes. Hyde park offers great jogging, and Ethos (the Imperial Sports Centre) over the road offers free gym and loads of other cut price activities. Oh and bring your swim gear as the pool is completely free!! Also, the hall has our very own football team so do come prepared if you want to play for glory!

15. I am travelling to Imperial and cannot possibly bring everything?!
If you wish, before you arrive at Imperial College London, you can purchase your essential items through www.unikitout.myshopify.com/collections/imperial.You can use the IMP17 code to get a discount. They provide a variety of packs that contain all the items needed in your student accommodation including bedding, bed linen, towels, crockery and cooking utensils – all delivered to your room before you arrive.
16. Are there laundry facilities in the Hall?
Wilkinson Hall has it own laundry room with washing machines and dryers on the Basement floor. Washes cost £2.20 and drying £1.20 per cycle. You will receive a laundry card on arrival and instructions for how to use it will be available in the laundry room. You are advised not to hang wet clothes on radiators, but some students might find it useful to bring a small clothes drying rack if you don’t like using dryers. There are also irons and ironing boards in the laundry rooms.
17. Does Imperial provide insurance for belongings?
Imperial College arranges basic insurance cover for students living in its halls of residence. Details will be provided in the welcome packs handed out on the first day. We recommend that any students with particularly valuable items should make their own insurance arrangements (however, please check before buying, as you may already be covered under your parent’s existing home insurance policy).
18. Can guests stay in my room?
If you have a single room, you are allowed to have an overnight guest staying with you up to 10 nights a term, for up to 3 days at a time. An overnight guest is defined as anyone staying with you in the Hall after 11pm. For fire regulations and security reasons you need to register your guests using the online form on our website. Guests are not allowed in twin rooms, or on moving-in weekend.
19. Do I need to let the hall know if I’m away overnight?

20. Can I contact my room-mate before I move in?
We don’t give out the contact details of your room-mate in advance, however, please feel free to use the discussion pages on our Facebook Page to get to know other people sharing – there is a good chance one of them will be your room mate.
21. Are all the different types of rooms scattered around the hall?
Yes, they are all mixed up… none of the floors are 100% premium or standard. It does not really matter as everything else (like kitchens, etc) are the same throughout the hall.
22. Are floors gender-mixed?
Yes.
23. Can I bring a musical instrument?
Yes, you may. Should it be quiet, you are welcome to practice in your room (provided you stop if you are requested to by your neighbours). Alternately, Imperial provides dedicated music practice rooms on campus where you can be as loud as you like!
24. How many people live on my floor?
This varies from floor to floor – level 5 has around 7, Lower Ground has nearer 28.
25. Can you store luggage in advance of moving in day?
No, for security reasons we cannot do this.
26. What facilities do the en-suite bathrooms contain?
All bathrooms have the same facilities: a toilet, shower, sink with mixer tap, a large mirror, towel rail, and lots of storage space in cupboards above and below the sink.
